During my senior year I had the pleasure of taking a 400-level special topics course on Disney and its many facets and here are the results of my final project. I hope my passion for Imagineering can shine through as you read.
The new reimaging of the Pacific Warf into San Fransokyo would be a great opportunity to create a new and exciting ride. This ride could help elevate the crowds from places like the newly opened Avengers Campus and the always-popular Toy Story Mania. The guest experience for this ride will be a spectacular combination of many great tools that Imagineers have been using for years with a fun new spin on them. With that in mind, I truly believe this ride would thrive as an addition to the extensive list of amazing rides that exist in Disney’s California Adventure.
This attraction should help inspire new generations to be creative and showcase new and fun ways of thinking. In addition, the exit area of the ride would be a place for Imagineers to showcase their latest technologies and concepts for everyone to enjoy. This could further inspire people to want to become Imagineers just as the Blue Sky Cellar has done for many years.
“Big Hero 6: Saving San Fransokyo” is an immersive ride that takes guests on a thrilling adventure through the city all starting at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology. The music being used for the attraction would be heavily inspired by the soundtrack written by Henry Jackman for the movie and incorporate some of the songs directly. Music is a simple yet effective way to enhance immersion for guests as a story is portrayed. As guests enter the institute, Hiro and the Big Hero 6 team will welcome them, and explain they are working on new technologies to keep the city safe from villains. In the queue line, you will walk through the laboratory area that is used by the Big Hero 6 team and other SFIT students seeing new and exciting inventions being worked on by a wide variety of students.
During the pre-show guests will be shown demonstrations of some of the new technologies that are being worked on at the institute. However, the demonstration will be cut short as reports of Obake hacking robots around the city come in. Guests will then be shown the pre-show lab area where they will use the technologies that were just demonstrated to make weapons to help the Big Hero 6 team stop the hacked robots and Obake. This lab area would be much like the car design area for the Test Track ride in EPCOT, but with new technologies and fewer options to hopefully lower wait times. This will include weapon types, range vs damage, and rate of fire vs accuracy. These weapons could range anywhere from GoGo’s disks, Fred’s fire, or Honey Lemon’s chemical reactions.
After the virtual construction of these weapons is done the Big Hero 6 team will equip them to the ride vehicle and you will load in to begin your adventure with the Big Hero 6 team. The ride vehicle will use a similar mechanism to that of Smugglers Run with the octopod motion base mounted on a carousel. This should help increase rider capacity, lower the ride footprint, and further immerse guests as they will be able to operate their personalized designs. Guests will adventure through San Fransokyo, stopping hacked robots while going down steep roads and avoiding cars until the team can triangulate the origin of the hacker Obake. The ride will feature many of the technologies Disney is well known for such as superior 3D visuals and special effects bringing the world of Big Hero 6 to life. This ride will also provide multiple storylines as it will depend on the guests' inventions and how well they are scoring, this will hopefully create a ride experience guests can continue to enjoy for many years.
After the ride concludes the guests will enter an innovation showcase much like the one in the movie that shows new and creative technologies, from the world of Big Hero 6 and our own. The addition of a memorial area for Tadashi Hamada with the different inventions he worked on would also make an amazing addition to this area. In addition, this will be the designated meeting spot for all the Big Hero 6 characters for photos and autographs, and become a store for pins and other Big Hero 6 merchandise.
